Speak Up: Derbywood residents besieged by turkey vultures

Posted

Residents of Derbywood, adjacent to Derby Pond in Camden, feel like they have been trapped in an Alfred Hitchcock film for three years. Looking out their windows, all they can see are “The Birds.” The neighborhood has been besieged by huge turkey vultures that perch atop houses and other structures, often leading to destruction of property.

  • This is what happens when you buy/build in rural areas. It’s almost like complaining that the chicken houses at the farm across the road smell. — Sarah Lucretia
  • Lack of oxygen in the pond. Small fish kill. Brings scavengers. — Bradley Leto
  • Not much can be done since they are protected. — Todd Stanley
  • Understanding biology, sun position and behavior will explain more than mere speculation. — Jay Wilkins
  • We get these in my neighborhood, too. They are really creepy. — Marie Desmond
  • Put an owl on your roof, and they will go away. You can even buy a motion sensor one that moves the owl’s head. My nephew had them all over his beach house. We bought the motion sensor one, and it worked! — S. Carolyn Marney
