Sussex County Lifesaving Assoc. wins ‘big game’ lifeguarding competition

DOVER — The Sussex County Lifesaving Association sent 79 lifeguards who outswam, outran, outpaddled, outrowed and outran the competition to win its first-ever United Lifesaving Association national championships.

The local team represented: Delaware State Beach Patrol, Rehoboth Beach Patrol, Dewey Beach Patrol, Sussex Shores Beach Patrol, North Bethany Beach Patrol, Bethany Beach Patrol, Sea Colony Beach Patrol, Middlesex Beach Patrol, and Fenwick Island Beach Patrol. 

The Delaware lifeguards earned 1,465 points to win. Los Angeles County, CA finished second at this year’s event with 939 points, and Monmouth County, NJ was third with 759 points at the event held Aug. 6-9.  

Elizabeth Fry, Sea Colony Beach Patrol, led the local team with 100.5 points, Coleman Woodward, Delaware State Beach Patrol, had 60.5 points, Cindy Fajarado, Sea Colony Beach Patrol, earned 58.75, Bailey Noel, Delaware State Beach Patrol, came away with 51.37, Ashlynn Roselle, Sussex Shores Beach Patrol, tallied 42 points, and Declan Burke, Middlesex Beach Patrol had 41.63 points.

The association said it is now focused on the 2024 World Lifesaving Championships in Broadbeach, Australia, Aug. 20 – Sept. 8.  

Sophia Gulotti, Rehoboth Beach Patrol, Lainey Shockro, Delaware State Beach Patrol, Ashlynn Roselle, North Bethany Beach Patrol, Rachel Kline, Sussex Shores Beach Patrol, Konner Knarr, Rehoboth Beach Patrol and Derek Shockro will be representing Delaware at the event.
