DOVER — The Delaware Division of Public Health reported a total of 344 breakthrough cases of COVID-19, as of Thursday at 6 p.m.

The DPH said a breakthrough case is defined as testing positive for COVID-19 after an individual has been fully vaccinated for two weeks or more — though it does not mean that the infection actually occurred after vaccination.

The total of 344 breakthrough cases represents 0.08% of the total amount of Delawareans who are fully vaccinated. There have been 392,753 Delawareans who are fully vaccinated and 434,608 individuals who have been fully vaccinated in the state.

Of the reported breakthrough cases, 15 involved hospitalizations and four resulted in death.

An additional 98,997 total persons are partially vaccinated, 88,827 of which are Delawareans. Partially vaccinated individuals have received their first dose of a two-dose vaccine series and are awaiting their second. Non-Delawareans can be vaccinated in the state provided they either work in Delaware or receive their health care in the First State.

The DPH also reported six newly announced COVID-19-related deaths in Friday’s update. Five of the six were from a review of Vital Statistics records from April and May.

One of the six did not have any underlying health conditions and another was a resident of a long-term care center. Of Delaware’s 1,674 COVID-19-related deaths, 757 are among long-term care residents (45%).

The six individuals ranged in age from 43 to 75 years old. Four were from New Castle County while one was from Kent County and one was a Sussex County resident. New Castle County has recorded the most COVID-19-related deaths in the state with 832, followed by Sussex County’s 497 and Kent County’s 345.

The DPH reported 46 new positive cases of COVID-19, bringing the state’s total to 109,005. The seven-day rolling average for new positive cases is 48.4 cases per day — the lowest since last August.

The DPH Laboratory has sequenced 2,915 specimens for COVID-19 variant strains as of Thursday, including 182 within the past week.

In aggregate, the cases include 990 adults ranging in age from 18 to 98 years old, as well as 223 individuals under the age of 18, the DPH said. A total of 920 individuals were from New Castle County, 168 were from Kent County and 125 were from Sussex County.

The U.K. variant, B.1.1.7, is the most prevalent variant in Delaware with 850 reported cases. The DPH identified three more cases of the newly formed India variant, B.1.617.2, to bring the state’s total to seven.

There are 51 individuals currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Delaware, down 11 from this time last week. Five of the hospitalized persons are critically ill, down four from last week, the DPH said.
