DOVER — A 23-year-old Virginia woman was arrested on weapons charges after a traffic stop Saturday, Dover police spokesman Sgt. Mark Hoffman said.

Kaitlyn Hammond of Sterling was a passenger in a vehicle that was stopped for speeding and stop sign violations in the area of River Road and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at approximately 10:57 p.m., authorities said.

During the stop, Sgt. Hoffman said, officers observed a small bag of marijuana in plain view on the center console. Ms. Hammond and the male driver were detained as a vehicle search ensued, during which officers located additional small bags of marijuana and a handgun inside of a purse belonging to Ms. Hammond, police said.

Ms. Hammond was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a person prohibited and carrying a concealed deadly weapon. She was released on an own-recognizance bond.
