Memorial Day will be observed in Georgetown on Sunday, with a ceremony on The Circle, and in Seaford on Monday, with a ceremony at the Veterans’ Memorial in Kiwanis Park.

The traditional Sussex County Memorial Day service Sunday on The Circle will begin at 1:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Georgetown Kiwanis Club, the Korean War Veterans Association and the Georgetown-Millsboro Rotary Club.

The keynote address, “From Sea to Shining Sea,” will be delivered by retired U.S. Air Force Col. Jeffrey P. Hilovsky, former medical commander of the 512th Airlift Wing. Dr. Hilovsky is also known locally as part of Sussex Eye Center and is currently active in civic and optometric endeavors.

Memorial wreathes will be placed by local veterans’ groups and service organizations in tribute to those who died in both World War I and World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and more recent conflicts to protect America’s freedoms. Assisting will be members of Boy Scouts of America Troop 95.

The program is scheduled to last about 50 minutes. Seating will be provided on The Circle. Attendees are also encouraged to bring folding chairs and abide by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines.

Seaford ceremony

Monday’s event in Seaford, sponsored by the Seaford Veterans Committee, will begin at 11 a.m.

Organizers request that attendees comply with all applicable COVID-19 protocols in force for the state at that time.

The scheduled guest speaker is Jake James, Gold Star father of U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Rick Z. James, who was killed in action in Iraq on May 13, 2006.

Recognition will be paid to all military personnel past and present, as well as any Gold Star families in attendance.

Because school bands are not available, there will not be a parade.

Kiwanis Park is located at Stein Highway and Atlanta Road.

If inclement weather is imminent, the ceremony will be held in the pavilion of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4961 at 11 a.m. The post is located at 9767 Middleford Road, Seaford.
At about 1 p.m., Post 4961 and American Legion Post 6 will be providing food in the VFW’s pavilion.

On behalf of the Seaford Veterans Committee -- consisting of VFW Post 4961, American Legion posts 6 and 37, AMVETS Post 1694, Marine Corps League Detachment 780 and Disabled American Veterans Chapter 9 -- co-chairmen Joe Tune and Pete Bohn extend an invitation to the public to attend this event, as the community “memorializes and honors the service and sacrifices of all veterans who have or are serving this country.”

Millsboro ceremony

A Memorial Day service will also be held at American Legion Post 28 in Millsboro on Monday. The indoor ceremony will begin at 1 p.m.
