Ocean View woman charged with embezzlement

WILMINGTON — A 54-year-old Ocean View woman was indicted for allegedly embezzling more than $1 million from her former employer, authorities announced on Thursday.

The indictment said that Joan Donald worked as a bookkeeper for Dovetail, Inc., an interior design company based in Bethany Beach, according to U.S. Attorney David C. Weiss. Over the course of at least seven years, she allegedly used Dovetail’s funds to pay for her personal expenses, including purchasing vehicles and taking trips to Disney World, he said.

“This defendant abused her position of trust and took advantage of a vulnerable, elderly victim (who owned Dovetail),” he said. “After financing her lifestyle with stolen funds for years, the time has come for her to answer for her actions.”

Ms. Donald is charged with wire fraud and tax evasion. If convicted, she faces up to 20 years in prison. Actual sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties, Mr. Weiss noted.

The FBI Baltimore Division’s Dover Resident Agency and IRS Criminal Investigation, with assistance from the Bethany Beach Police Department, conducted the investigation.
