Pohanka Automotive supports Vehicles for Change program

Posted

Three local families received cars donated to the nonprofit organization Vehicles for Change from the Pohanka Automotive Group of Salisbury.

The recipients include single moms Aszaine Cole and Kristen Jenkins, and Kyle Dickerson from the foster care system.

Vehicles for Change is a nonprofit organization that accepts donated cars from the public and repairs them to be awarded to worthy families in Maryland and Virginia at a low price.

All repairs are done through the VFC’s Full Circle program, designed to train returning citizens in automotive technology.

Pohanka participates as part of its “paying it forward” effort to help charities across the Eastern Shore.

Pohanka Automotive is teaming with the Greater Salisbury Committee to bring VFC to Salisbury, hopefully this fall.

The lack of reliable transportation, both public and private, is a major obstacle for low-income families striving to grow financially and personally. Access to a car can help families increase their earnings, and obtain better health- and child-care.

Vehicles for Change accepts, and repairs donated cars and awards them to pre-qualified families for as little as $950, enabling low-income families to become more self-sufficient.

A nonprofit organization, VFC receives 99 percent of its car donations from the public.

Since 1999, VFC has awarded more than 6,800 cars to low-income families, changing the lives of more than 24,000 people.

Eligible families are referred to VFC through partnering social service type agencies. VFC car donors gain a substantial tax advantage that is not available with most other charities.
