CRISFIELD — Just days before the start of winter and the longest night of the year Janes Island State Park is taking advantage of the darkness with a free stargazing program this Saturday, Dec. 16.

The sun will be setting at 4:45 p.m. and at 5 visitors will gather at Picnic Shelter 2 to look up into the heavens under a waxing crescent moon.

The shining moon in the west after sunset is first visible a day or two after a new noon which is Tuesday this week. It will be visible to the naked eye but with the park’s telescopes more of its features and celestial bodies will be more readily visible in the night sky.

Those attending are reminded to wear warm clothing and bring a blanket or chair. For more information call the park office at 410-968-1565. The park is located off Jacksonville Road at the end of Alfred J. Lawson Drive.
