The Wizard of Oz ballet leaps onto the stage in Salisbury

Posted

A ballet stage production of “The Wizard of Oz” is coming this spring to Salisbury, Md., presented by Eastern Shore Ballet Theatre, Inc. As a special treat, this original production will be directed by ESBT alumna Shelby Trenary.

Live performances will be May 3 to 5 at Wicomico High School: Friday at 7 p.m.; Saturday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets are at www.esbt.org.

Eastern Shore Ballet Theatre is a pre-professional company, so all the dancers (mostly 18 and under) audition and train regularly at their home studios. What’s special is that the students must be actively taking lessons, but it can be any studio on the Delmarva Peninsula.

“It’s a beautiful thing to see our students perform for their own community,” said Leslie Belloso, dance parent and vice president of Eastern Shore Ballet Theatre.

After performing the classic “The Nutcracker” every winter, the ESBT prepares a different piece each spring, like “Swan Lake,” “Sleeping Beauty” or a flight-ful “Peter Pan.”

Trenary was born and raised in Salisbury and began her training with Salisbury Studio of Dance under the direction of Betty Webster and Elena Manakhova-Amy. She was a long-standing member with the Eastern Shore Ballet Theatre and earned a bachelor’s degree in dance from Marymount Manhattan College, where she worked with world-renowned choreographers such as Pascal Rioult, Jessica Lang, Katie Langan, and Igal Perry. She has performed professionally as a Dancecore Company member, a Peconic Ballet Theatre company member, a Ballet Ambassadors company member, and a Continuum Contemporary Ballet apprentice. Trenary has taught and choreographed for children of all ages for various projects across the east coast.
