FREDERICA - The Delaware State Police are investigating a single-car crash Wednesday that left a 40-year-old Frederica man dead, spokesman Senior Cpl. Leonard DeMalto said.

At approximately 6:40 p.m., authorities said, a green 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling at a high rate of speed south on Jackson Street south of Front Street. The Mercury reached the southern end of Jackson Street, which is blocked by a row of trees, police said.

The Mercury did not slow down as it continued south off Jackson Street, where it struck a set of trees and came to a stop, police said.

The driver of the Grand Marquis was not wearing his seat belt, police said. He sustained critical injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified.

Jackson Street was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.

The Troop 3 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate.

Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to  contact Master Cpl. W. Booth by calling 302-698-8451. Information may also be provided by sending a Private Facebook Message to the Delaware State Police or contacting Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
