Milford Museum to present program on desegregation in New Castle

Posted

MILFORD -- The Milford Museum will continue its American History Series with a program titled “To Bus or Not to Bus: The 1977 School Desegregation of New Castle County, Delaware” at the Milford Public Library on May 11 at 11 a.m.

It will present the story of the five families in Wilmington that decided to re-open the Evans v. Buchanan desegregation case and file a suit against the Wilmington School Board, which the court ultimately agreed with causing a program to be designed to bring the county back to their desegregationist roots.

Busing was a policy in the program that was very controversial. The presentation will explore the decision for New Castle County to use busing students for a portion of their schooling as a remedy for school segregation.

This will entail the origins of school segregation, the use of busing as a remedy and the opinions of Delawareans during the time of segregation.

The program will be presented by Emily Green, a teacher from Polytech High School. She is a Delaware native that now teaches contemporary world history and AP United States history at Polytech.

The Milford Public Library is at 11 S.E. Front Street in Milford. These presentation are offered through grants from the Delaware Heritage Commission.
