Sussex Technical Adult Education to receive additional truck for CDL instruction

Posted

GEORGETOWN — In response to the growing demand for qualified commercial driver’s license (CDL-A & B) drivers, Sussex Tech Adult Education Division has received funding to purchase additional training trucks and have added additional CDL courses beginning this summer.

In 2022, as part of a statewide initiative funded by Sen. Chris Coons, D-Del., a CDL training truck was purchased to allow all three Delaware Vocational-Technical Districts, New Castle VT, Poly VT, and Sussex VT, to share the truck and work together to train students in the transportation and logistics sector.

After adding the first Class A CDL course in the spring of 2023, Sussex Tech Adult Ed was challenged with interest far out weighing their capacity to accommodate as one truck was being shared with three districts.  In addition, transportation industry partners expressed the need for a CDL-B specific training component.

A proposal, requesting funds for a Class A&B expansion, was submitted to Sussex County Legislators in December 2023.  Sussex Tech Adult Ed was notified of the proposal acceptance in February 2024.  The funds will be used to purchase both A and B CDL training trucks which will be used for classes beginning this summer.
