Sussex Technical High School hosts American Welding Society Delmarva Student Competition

GEORGETOWN — Sussex Technical High School served as the host location for the American Welding Society (AWS) Delmarva Section Student Competition Feb. 10 with 11 student competitors from Delaware and Maryland, and Virginia.

Student competitors were required to answer five questions as well as complete welding projects.  The welding portion of the contest consisted of GMAW, SMAW 6010 and 7018, blueprint reading and fabrication skills.

AWS District chair, Stephanie Hollman, host of the Metal Shop Masters television show, was in attendance for this first high school student welding competition.

Contest winners:

  • First Place-Michael Parks from Parkside Career Technology Center
  • Second Place-Jonathan Ramirez from T.H. Badger Technical 
  • Third Place-Brayden Hurd from Polytech High School
